Outreach Events

Dia de Ciencias (“Science Day”)

This event exposes high school students to the exciting STEM fields as well as kick-start the college process. Students will participate in a hands-on engineering design competition while parents will attend a financial aid and college application workshop. The evening concludes with a panel of current students and engineering professionals. All presentations are given in both English and Spanish.

Transfer Student Summit

Community College students are invited to spend a day at USC with current undergraduate students and answer any inquiries on the transferring process, in addition to learning about our experiences and how to ensure a smooth transition from community college to university. Workshops include financial aid presentations, current student panelists, and tours of on-campus labs and design teams, as well as a lunch with current students.

Women’s Discover Engineering Day (WDED)

This event aims to empower and inspire girls to pursue STEM. We collaborate with the Society of Women Engineers on this event, which invites 100 girls from local middle  and high schools to spend a day at USC’s campus, and rotate through sessions that include a hands-on project, a high-school prep session, and design lab tours. The students have lunch with current USC students and professionals, and the day concludes with a keynote speaker who herself followed her passions in STEM.

Discover Engineering Day (DED)

Held as SHPE-USC’s E-Week event annually on the last day of National Engineering Week, DED is the largest event of the year. We collaborate with Robogals and Theta Tau to host an exciting, fun-filled day for 200 local middle and high school students. Students participate in a hands-on design competition, attend a panel to learn about the different engineering disciplines, a high school preparation presentation, and lunch with USC students and engineering professionals, all to get excited about STEM . At the end of the day, students attend a keynote presentation.

Day at the Museum (DATM)

Day at the Museum is our annual event for elementary school students, to get them and their families excited about science early on in their education. This event invites both students and parents to tour the California Science Center and the Endeavor Spacecraft with USC students as guides, as well as participate in a fun, hands-on science experiment. Students are given take-home science projects at the end of day to keep the excitement going.

SHPE Jr. (High School Mentorship)

SHPE Jr. is a biweekly mentorship program in which student volunteers at USC mentor high school students from Augustus Hawkins High School. Each meeting is around three hours long, during which we touch on topics like time management, leadership, or mental health (to name a few), followed by  academic tutoring sessions and college preparation. Our curriculum and focus is dependent on grade level.
